Penske Truck Leasing and Penske Logistics have been named 2017 Military-Friendly Employers by Victory Media, the publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. Penske placed in the Bronze category.
This is the first year of a new format. Previously Victory issued a Top 100 list, and Penske had earned placement there for five straight years.
The Military-Friendly Employers designation includes extensive research and a data-driven survey of corporations nationally. According to Victory, the survey, methodology, criteria and weightings are created with the aid of an independent advisory council and tested by EY.

Companies received consideration for this list via a data-driven survey of thousands of companies with resulting survey data independently tested by Ernst & Young LLP based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media.
Criteria for the survey included a benchmark score across key programs and policies such as the strength of company military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service, retention programs and company policies on National Guard and Reserve service.
“Companies that have earned the 2016 Military-Friendly Employer award have exceptionally strong hiring programs and meaningful careers for transitioning service members and spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, chief product officer of Victory Media and Navy Reserve veteran.
Penske was No. 91 overall and achieved an industry rank of 13th.

The magazine recognizes military friendly companies that demonstrate commitment to recruiting America’s veterans. Penske ranked 68th on the overall 2014 Top 100 list.

Penske actively recruits veterans nationwide by promoting employment opportunities in military publications, on veterans’ job boards and at military virtual and in-person career fairs.
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the U.S. Department of the Defense, recognizes Penske for supporting associates who serve in the military. So far this year, 37 Penske associates have been on military leave. Ten are presently serving.
Penske signed up for the Vet Friendly Challenge, pledging to join other companies in an effort to hire 50,000 veterans and their spouses by 2018.

Penske Logistics is a winner of the 2013 Above and Beyond award from the Michigan Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the U.S. Department of the Defense, for its support of company employees that serve in the military.
According to the ESGR, the honor is bestowed to companies “who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees.”
Penske was nominated by one of its associates, Ian Mitchell, a senior logistics analyst working on the company’s Ford Motor Company account in Dearborn, Mich.
Among the Penske veteran benefits that were cited by the ESGR at an awards dinner in East Lansing, Mich.:
Penske providing four weeks of pay differential and continued insurance coverage (for the associate and their families)
Routine sending of care packages overseas to deployed associates
Maintaining a strong line of communication with a service member’s family during time of deployment
Mitchell, a former active duty U.S. Army staff sergeant, is now a captain in the Army National Guard. He has served in the Michigan National Guard since 2006. Since joining Penske, he has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.
Mitchell said of his employer: “It’s very family oriented and supportive. I believe that Penske looks out for the best interest of its associates. I feel extremely fortunate to have a management team that is so supportive of my service. Their support is an enabler for my continued service.”

Penske has expanded its veteran recruiting efforts by working withMilicruit, a website devoted to pairing U.S. military veterans with prospective employers through online employment fairs.
This Thursday, Penske will partake in Milicruit’s national virtual career fair, hosting real-time chats with prospective employees from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. Veterans can log onto the fair, and communicate with Penske, and other leading companies, regarding employment opportunities.
The company will take part in 16 other regional and national virtual career fairs, through November. Penske has had success in hiring veterans in a wide array of jobs.
Penske also participates in the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), which is an arm of the U.S. Department of Defense. Employers that adhere to ESGR guidelines provide a supportive environment to employees serving in the military’s various reserve units.
