The Official Blog for Penske Truck Leasing, Truck Rental and Logistics

Reading, Pa. – Nov. 18, 2024 - Penske Truck Leasing is lighting up a new solar-powered initiative seeking to boost efficiency, minimize energy costs, and reduce emissions initially at select truck leasing, truck rental, and truck maintenance locations in the U.S. with the installation and activation of its first-ever rooftop solar-powered systems.

The company’s new state-of-the-art facility in Channahon, Illinois, is now fully operational, and is predominantly powered by an onsite photovoltaic (PV) solar system, expected to generate roughly 80% of the building’s energy needs at 200 KW capacity. Any remaining required energy will be supplied by the local utility provider.

A Grand Rapids, Michigan, location will be active in the coming months and Penske’s Linden, New Jersey, location is expected to go online in 2025. These facilities are also new state-of-the-art locations.

The new facilities incorporating solar systems in Channahon, Illinois, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Linden, New Jersey, are part of the company’s LEED building program.

Under a power purchase agreement with Sunrock Distributed Generation, seven additional Penske facilities in California are expected to be retrofitted with new PV solar systems in the next year, which are expected to yield roughly 600 KW of renewable energy across all locations. These facilities are located in Fresno, Hayward, La Mirada, National City, Riverside, San Diego and San Leandro.

Penske is collaborating with San Francisco-based ForeFront Power as its lead project consultant on this solar initiative.

“Our solar program is an important piece of our renewable energy strategy and ForeFront Power continues to be an outstanding partner in helping us bring these projects to fruition,” said Drew Cullen, senior vice president of fuels and facility services at Penske. “These investments will allow us to directly generate our own renewable energy to power our locations and continue to support our customers with sustainable solutions.”

On average, four solar panel-powered Penske Truck Leasing facilities will generate an estimated 1-million-kilowatt hours (kWh) of renewable energy annually and will result in an emissions avoidance of 442 metric tons (MT) CO2e, which is equal to powering nearly 90 homes for one year.

“The initiative to install solar systems at our locations is a part of our company’s LEED-certified facilities process,” explained Ivet Taneva, Penske vice president of environmental affairs. “Investing in solar has considerable economic impacts for our operations as well as the environmental benefits of further reducing emissions related to electricity use.”

READING, Pa., August 5, 2024 Penske Truck Leasing recently launched an electronic driver vehicle inspection report (eDVIR) feature in the Penske Driver™ mobile app for its customers. This new feature enables customer truck drivers to submit driver vehicle inspection reports electronically using the free Penske Driver app.

This new eDVIR functionality also provides fleet managers with immediate access to the submissions sent through the app using Fleet Insight™, Penske’s real-time fleet management platform. This advancement aims to streamline inspection processes, enhance compliance and improve overall fleet management efficiency.

“Our new eDVIR capability represents a step forward in how we support our customers’ compliance and maintenance needs,” said Brandie Searle, vice president of digital product management for Penske. “By responding to customer feedback with this highly requested feature we enable electronic submissions and real-time visibility, helping fleet managers address issues quickly and effectively, reducing downtime and improving operational efficiency.”

The eDVIR feature is designed to help users stay compliant with Department of Transportation regulations and is exclusive to Penske leased, maintained, or rented vehicles. The upgrade streamlines the repair request process by automatically sending defect reports from the telematics system to Penske’s maintenance system. As defects are resolved, detailed mechanic notes and resolution statuses are communicated back to the telematics system, providing essential information such as repair shop locations, repair notes and contact details.

The Penske Driver app is used by approximately 20,000 commercial truck drivers monthly and offers a range of features including logging Hours of Service to comply with the Electronic Logging Device mandate, submitting 24/7 roadside assistance requests, checking-in for service visits, submitting fuel receipts digitally and finding location rental, leasing, service, parking, EV charging and fueling locations. The app provides access to vehicle information, service history and 24/7 support.

Penske offers live, free weekly training webinars on Penske Driver to ensure customers can effectively use the technology. Penske Driver is available for download on both Android and Apple devices. For additional guidance and information, download Penske’s eBook: “Complete Daily Tasks and Stay Compliant with Penske Driver.”

READING, Pa., April 18, 2024 -- Today, Penske Truck Leasing unveiled Catalyst AI™ – an industry first AI platform set to revolutionize fleet management that delivers real-time insight into fleet performance. Catalyst AI marks a pivotal shift away from traditional industry benchmarks, empowering fleet managers with actionable intelligence to optimize fleet performance using dynamic comparative data.

The Catalyst AI™ platform compares a fleet’s performance to similar fleets across Penske’s live database of hundreds of thousands of vehicles in real-time. This platform enables leaders to benchmark their fleets using apples-to-apples comparisons, unlock fuel efficiency opportunities, optimize utilization, and business performance using targeted insights.

New industry research found 77% of transportation professionals tend to rely on historical, annual forecasting and industry benchmark reports to inform their fleet planning and procurement decisions. For fleet managers, this process is often manual, time consuming and relies on data that may not holistically compare to their specific fleets.

“Catalyst AI was born from our vision to harness the power of AI to meet the needs of today’s fleet managers,” said Ann Walsh, senior vice president of digital and customer data at Penske. “By integrating over 57 billion data points with AI, our patent-pending algorithm and industry expertise enables fleet managers to better optimize their operations using leading-edge technology.”

Penske Truck Leasing is ushering in a new era in fleet management by enabling fleet managers to evaluate fleet performance. At the heart of Catalyst AI lies its patent-pending algorithm that identifies the most-similar fleets by evaluating key dimensions of fleet operations and composition. This process creates a unique "fleet DNA," enabling highly customized operational KPI benchmarks tailored to each fleet's specific performance needs.

“With innovation at our core, Penske is committed to developing solutions that drive efficiency and performance for our customers. Catalyst AI addresses the critical need for comparative, real-time insights in fleet management,” said Sherry Sanger, executive vice president of strategy and marketing for Penske. “This cutting-edge technology enables businesses to unlock new efficiencies, reduce costs, and ultimately, sets a new standard for fleet performance.”

Catalyst AI represents a game-changer in fleet management. In an industry first, fleet managers will have access to actionable insights and intelligence to unlock the full potential of their fleets. For millions of drivers – including many Penske DIY movers and professional truck drivers, anticipation is building for Monday’s first visible total solar eclipse in seven years.

During the solar eclipse, the daytime sky is set to darken in parts of the country as the Moon passes in front of the Sun and casts its shadow to fall on the Earth.

Yet, experts like AAA are urging drivers to take extra safety precautions and avoid the strong temptation to try and catch a glimpse of the eclipse while driving.

Fascination has long surrounded the dance of celestial bodies jockeying for position in the daytime sky.

The last total solar eclipse in the U.S. occurred in 2017 and was viewed by an estimated 215 million people – or 88% of the population, according to NASA.

With the solar eclipse’s path over North America estimated to be between 108 and 122 miles wide this year, the eclipse will pass over more cities and densely populated areas than in 2017, increasing the number of potential viewers.

Coming to a View Near You?

Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that will experience totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PT, according to NASA.

The path of the eclipse will leave Mexico and enter the U.S. in Texas. From there it will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

The eclipse will enter Canada in Southern Ontario, and continue through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. The eclipse will exit continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT.

Whether viewers are in the path of totality - where the Moon mostly blocks the Sun revealing just the outer atmosphere - or in locations revealing less of the eclipse, experts encourage everyone to take steps to protect their vision.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests wearing eclipse glasses with certified solar filters, making a pinhole viewer to watch the eclipse indirectly or viewing a live stream of the eclipse.

Driving During the Eclipse

Drivers are encouraged to avoid travel during the eclipse, but if you do plan to drive, AAA offers these tips:

  • Keep headlights on.
  • Put the sun visor down to block your view of the sun.
  • Do NOT wear eclipse glasses while driving.
  • Do NOT try to photograph or video the eclipse while driving.
  • Do NOT pull over to the side of the road, highway or interstate to view the eclipse.
  • Exit the roadway and park in a safe area away from traffic to view the eclipse.
  • Be mindful of pedestrians who may be walking around with their eyes on the sky.

If you miss out on Monday’s solar eclipse, take heart. The next total solar eclipse will be visible in Montana and North Dakota in August 2044. However, NASA predicts the next coast-to-coast total solar eclipse will not occur until 2045.
